UFC President Dana White shocked MMA fans around the world when he broke the news of Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane for the UFC Heavyweight Championship in the main event of UFC 285 on March 4, 2023. Dana via press conference said that the UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou has vacated his title and is now a free agent. The reigning Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou was released following a more than year-long contract dispute with the company.

According to Dana White, the UFC offered Francis Ngannou a very good deal which would have easily made him the highest-paid Heavyweight Fighter in the UFC even more than former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar but Francis Ngannou declined the offer. So, now Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane will fight for the UFC Heavyweight Championship on March 4 in the main event of UFC 285 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
